In development, The House of Wonder (HoW) is a retreat space in Miranda, New Zealand. We mix creativity in art, science and business to offer a quiet and inspiring country retreat space to companies, organisations and families.
The house itself is a simple, large country house, built in approximately 1915 by Robert Graham Findlay, and has stayed in the family, who have been in Miranda for four generations. The R. G. Findlay Wildlife Reserve nearby is a part of the remaining family land, and is managed by the House of Wonder in partnership with the Miranda Naturalist Trust and Shorebird Centre.
As a retreat space, we have a particular interest in supporting sustainability research and development in all areas. This includes those companies or organisations working to innovate or improve products and services, learning institutions developing scientific or cultural understandings, through to interested families and individuals.
As a strategy towards this, our programmes encourage the sharing of knowledge, ideas, skills, perspectives, intrigues and fascinations about nature across disciplines and cultures.
In this way we nurture a far-reaching and multi-disciplinary network of knowledge areas. This allows us to look again at often overlooked or forgotten principles of nature, and to create an environment for both developing inspiring ideas, and the capacity for critically assessing them. In addition to the ongoing dinner and dialogues series, we can also offer walks and workshops for the young or inquisitive per group booking upon request.
Where noted, walks and workshops have been supported through a partnership with Intercreate.org, an arts organisation which works to cross-pollinate creativity across art, science, culture and technology.
If you are in or frequently visit the mid-upper North Island of New Zealand, and are interested to join our programming of dinners and workshops, we encourage you to join the facebook or LinkedIn groups, and keep in touch with upcoming events. Or if you would like to book a stay at the house, please contact us.
